If you're on the hunt for your next binge-watching obsession, look no further. The Hallyu (Korean wave) is here, and it's time to ride it. Korean dramas are all the rage, and why shouldn't they be? They have it all, with unique storylines ranging from serial killers to nine-tailed foxes and exceptional cinematography, songs, and cast. The best thing about K-dramas is that there's something for everyone, and they're just about 16 episodes long. You can't help but keep coming back for more. So, if you're ready to jump the bandwagon, here is a list of some of the best beginner K-dramas that will keep you hooked and deep-dive into an unknown land.
- Squid Game: This Emmy-winning K-drama is partially responsible for putting all K-dramas on the world's radar. It was the #1 trending show in 90 countries. The show is about 456 adults who, hoping to win a huge cash prize, participate in a series of kids' games. But there's a catch. The only way to win this game is by surviving.
- Crash Landing on You: A South Korean heiress, Se-ri, gets into a freak paragliding accident and literally crash lands in North Korea. She happens to meet the charismatic Captain Ri, a North Korean soldier who, along with his underlings, makes it his mission to send her home safely. Although the story may seem far-fetched at times, the chemistry of the lead pair, the tales of the side characters, and the attempts of the villain to foil Captain Ri's plans will surely pull you in for good.
- Itaewon Class: This is a story of pure grit and perseverance. Park Sae-royi, an ex-convict, sets out to take down the head of a robust food conglomerate that has wronged him. He faces several setbacks but continues his pursuit of becoming a successful businessman without compromising his morals. This is the K-drama for those wanting to feel inspired.
- Flower of Evil: It is a romantic crime thriller about Baek Hee-sung, a psychopath, who is married to Cha Ji-won, a detective. They seem to be the ideal family on the outside: a devoted couple with a lovely daughter. Their perfect life starts unravelling when Cha Ji-won and her coworkers start looking into a string of suspicious killings, which makes her realize that her seemingly ideal husband might not be who she thinks he is.
- SKY Castle: The experiences of four women and their families are followed in this series as they attempt to preserve the status quo among South Korean society's elite. The drama centres on a mother's fixation with using all means necessary to get her daughter into a prestigious university. If you're into human-interest stories, SKY Castle is undoubtedly the K-drama for you because it has a nice balance of romance, soap opera drama, and comedy.
